Literature and medicine. A Book Discussion Club at a medical univeristy

Abstract

One of the primary functions of a library is to promote reading. This is what every library, regardless of its type and nature, does on a daily basis - by lending books and providing a place for quiet reading. In addition to these elementary forms of book promotion, many libraries undertake additional activities by organising various events and reading initiatives, such as meetings with authors, literary competitions or book fairs. Another way of encouraging regular contact with literature is through book discussion clubs, which are becoming increasingly popular. They are transforming libraries from mere lending facilities into places that actively promote committed, reflective reading and create bonds based on shared interests. But they also fulfil another very important function: they serve to foster dialogue between people. This article demonstrates the uniqueness of a book discussion club based in a university library, and more specifically, a medical university library. The theoretical part considers the value of group reading, and the practical part describes the activities of the Book Discussion Club of the MUG Main Library.
